Senior Principal Scientist Discovery Process Chemistry (m/f/d)

As a Senior Principal Scientist in Discovery Process Chemistry (m/f/d), you will lead internal and external early API development and supply activities to support lead optimization, preclinical, and early clinical R&D/CMC teams. You are responsible for chemical route design, process optimization, and supply for small molecule drug candidates and building blocks at external partners, generating benefits in yield, quality, and cost. Your role includes working with small molecules of high complexity and synthetic modalities such as peptides. You will ensure the competitiveness of production processes by evaluating and applying new and state-of-the-art chemical technologies and processes.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead chemical process R&D activities, including route design, process development, and supply activities in collaboration with external partners
- Perform assessments of chemical routes and manufacturing & supply concepts
- Manage complex API projects at suppliers with a high degree of independence, ensuring appropriate alliance management
- Collaborate closely in interdisciplinary project teams
- Develop and optimize methods, models, and processes according to the latest advancements in process chemistry and technologies
- Drive excellence in synthetic chemistry within Pharmaceutical Sciences and across the Bayer-wide chemistry community
- Provide chemical expertise and consultancy, proposing quick solutions in troubleshooting within the internal and external network
- Present findings and progress updates to internal stakeholders and at external conferences and workshops
WHO YOU ARE
- PhD in organic chemistry or related discipline with profound knowledge of classical and modern synthetic methods & technologies, with knowledge of modern tools in digital chemistry as a plus
- Long-term experience in process chemistry and relevant technologies, ideally at the interface of research & development in the pharmaceutical industry
- Experience in managing external partners or working at a CRO/CDMO
- High ability to solve problems and structure and simplify complex tasks
- Strong interpersonal and influencing leadership skills and intercultural competences, with the ability to build trustful relationships and motivate team members
- Excellent presentation and communication skills, including the ability to communicate across multiple levels within and outside the organization
- High assertiveness, service orientation, and enjoyment of working in a cross-functional team
- Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written, fluency in German is advantageous
